Lego Project: Raised Landing Pad

(Project completed: 2003-08)

Model overview.

This is a raised landing pad with a control room underneath, and roads below that. It is shown above accomodating one of my Galaxy Explorers. The pad is accessible by vehicles using ramps. The practicality of such a construction is questionable, but it's something I have wanted to build for some time. I've seen a few other takes on this idea at other peoples' Lego websites, but this one is very much my own.

I use the convenient ramp pieces from the road construction set to make the pad accessible for loading of ships. I had originally planned a large cargo elevator, Akira-style, but this was easier. I use the crane legs from the same set to support the control room beneath the pad.

Landing camera detail.

The only things projecting above the pad are these shielded stereo cameras, through which people in the control room can monitor the landing.

Catwalk detail.

Here are images of the stairs and catwalks leading from street level to the control room and pad level. I'm not totally pleased with the railings, but other attempts ended up looking even uglier. If you look closely you will see some cracks and misaligned pieces here, but those are entirely due to moving the whole thing for the photo shoot, and I didn't notice them until later.

Top with landing pad removed.

Here's what the top looks like with the landing pad baseplate removed. There are lots of structural supports for the weight of the ships landing.

Interior detail.

The control room with the roof support removed. The door leads out to one of the catwalks.
